How to Get Rid of Cooking Smells & Food Smells

Cooking smells can linger in your home for hours or even days, especially when food has been fried or burnt. It can be dificuilt to know how to get rid of cooking smells. However, there's a solution: the Smell Away® Odour Neutraliser which is a highly rated air cleaner and purifier.

Smell Away® Odour Neutraliser & Dust Remover - Gets Rid of Smells from Cooking & Food

Banish the smells of cooked food and burnt food with Smell Away® 🍲

Cooking at home can be enjoyable, therapeutic even, but any lingering smells can become nuisance. The Smell Away® Odour Neutraliser provides an effective solution for eliminating stubborn cooking and food smells, ensuring your home remains fresh and welcoming.

Basic ways to help get rid of cooked food smells

  • Open more windows, if you can: The reason we say "if you can" is because for many people, opening windows can cause problems, due to cold or wet weather, living near noisy neighbours, being near a busy road or, if it's summer, attracting flies from the smell of food. But when possible, ventilation is effective for minimising cooking smells. Use your kitchen’s extractor fan, open windows, and portable fans to help air circulate.
  • Neutralise strong food odours immediately: Foods like fish, garlic, and spices can leave particularly strong odours. Clean cooking utensils and surfaces promptly after use, and store leftovers in sealed containers to prevent smells from spreading.
  • Use natural odour absorbers: Household items like vinegar, baking soda, and coffee grounds can help absorb odours. Place bowls of these items around the kitchen while cooking to capture smells before they spread.
  • Eliminate stale food and takeaway smells: The lingering smell of stale foods and takeaways can be particularly stubborn. Dispose of old food promptly and take out the rubbish regularly. The Smell Away® is especially effective at neutralising these persistent odours, restoring freshness to your home.

When you can't just open windows to get rid of cooked food smells, use the Smell Away®

Get rid of grease smells in kitchen 🍳

Grease smells in the kitchen can be tough to get rid of. They tend to cling to everything, especially after frying or grilling. Regular cleaning helps, but for a real solution, the Smell Away® Odour Neutraliser works wonders:

  • Neutralise grease smells in the air:  the Smell Away® Odour Neutraliser effectively captures and neutralises grease smells in the air. Its ability to tackle odour molecules directly makes it a powerful solution for keeping your kitchen fresh, even after preparing oily or fried dishes.
  • Attack odours at their source: The Smell Away® Odour Neutraliser targets and neutralises cooking odours where they originate. Unlike air fresheners that mask smells, it captures and breaks down the molecules causing the odour, ensuring a genuinely fresh atmosphere.
  • Maintain continuous freshness: Keep your home smelling clean around the clock. By running the Smell Away® continuously, you’ll notice a significant improvement in air quality within just a few days.
  • Easy to use: Operating the Smell Away® is straightforward. Place it in the room where cooking odours are most intense, plug it in, and switch it on. Its compact design makes it easy to move from the kitchen to the dining room or living room as needed. "We used it in our kitchen and then moved it to the living room after dinner. The air feels fresher and cleaner now," shared one customer.
  • Combat odours in every room: Food smells can travel into different rooms, especially with air movement. The Smell Away® can be unplugged from the kitchen and simply moved to another room to get to work. Ideal for use when windows and doors are closed, it works effectively without the need for external ventilation.
  • Energy efficient and cost-effective: The Smell Away® is designed to use minimal energy, making it a cost-effective solution for keeping your home free from cooking smells without inflating your electricity bill.

Bacon and curry smells
"I was sceptical on whether this would work, I tried it whilst cooking bacon and a curry and it worked there too, and by the smelly kitchen bin. Was surprised and can't wait to keep using it! Odours are eliminated quickly and the Smell Away® is very quiet too. Fantastic product! 5*"

Fish smells
"Such a powerful little thing! Got rid of fish cooking smells in minutes!"

Christine

"Great addition to the home."
The unit works really well. My lounge is attached to the kitchen so the unit stops the living room smelling of cooking - which I hate! Wasn't sure how long to leave it on for to start with, but 10 - 15 minutes seems to work. Also had to go outside & come back in to fully appreciate how the smells had gone as I tend to go 'nose blind'!

Customer from London

"In the right space this works"
"Needs to be in a contained area with no too many draughts. But this machine can take all sorts of pet and cooking smells from the air."

Customer from Middlesbrough

One customer's battle against burnt-cooking smells and smoke

"We left pot of rice pudding left on stove on high for 2 hours!!

"There was a veil of smoke all over the house! + AWFUL smell.

Kitchen door was ajar to allow cat get access to cat flap!

"I opened all windows and doors all the time I was at home-it was -5 up here in Scotland) burned pot went in bin!

Washed down cupboards - even on top.

"Dismantled and cleaned and replaced filter paper in kitchen hood. ! With soda crystals and vinegar water. Took curtains to dry cleaners.

"Washed walls as best I could reach. used boxes of shake n vac type powder in carpets and left for a day- washes as many surfaces as I could, sprayed fabrese and used smelly pine sticks to use with artificial Xmas trees!! ( never used as they were too pungent! Pine was better than smoke.

"Even so the smell was still bad. Upstairs I had 2 diffusers with oil of cloves( used for toothache!) diffusers are used to counteract dry air, normally don’t use oils. all bedding was changed-my jackets I kept in the garage ! No smoke there. They were in cupboard under stairs. Smelled of smoke.

"Now after 3 days with Smell Away it seems I can’t smell hardly any smoke. I’ll put it in another room after a week and see how I get on- but it’s definitely MUCH better after 3 days. I’m definitely keeping it."

Misconceptions about eliminating cooking odours

There are several misconceptions about how to eliminate cooking and food odours. Here are a few methods that don’t actually help, or are expensive:

  • Air fresheners and scented sprays: These products might mask the smell temporarily but don’t address the underlying issue. One customer mentioned, “Air fresheners only made the cooking smells more noticeable. The Smell Away®, however, eliminated them completely.”
  • Extractor fans: Extractor fans can be costly, difficult to fit, and ineffective over time, especially since they can't be moved nearer the source of the smell or around the house to tackle other odours. If natural ventilation isn't feasible due to weather or noise, consider an odour neutraliser like the Smell Away®. As one customer in Scotland said, "The Smell Away is surprisingly effective. We use it mainly to cut down on cooking smells that are not removed by our cooker hood. However it also gives a fresh feel to the air indoors on days when it's too cold to have the windows open all day."
  • Overuse of baking soda: While a small amount of baking soda can help absorb odours, using too much can create a mess and doesn’t neutralise smells effectively.
  • Essential oils: Some believe that adding essential oils to the cooking area can help with odours, but this only masks the smell and doesn’t tackle the root cause.
  • Air purifiers: Though effective at removing airborne particles like dust and pollen, air purifiers often fall short in neutralising bad odours. They capture particulates but don’t break down the odour molecules, leaving smells lingering in the air.
