Plastic Injection Moulding Manufacturing

Smell Away SA1 prototype

The two part cases need to be made via a process called injection moulding. This is where the hot plastic is squirted into a metal mould to make the required parts.

The lid top part is quite simple to to build a mould mould by a moulding specialist, but the bottom basket part is complex and required hydraulic leavers and water cooling. The have been consulting with an injection moulding specialist who has been optimising the design.

This injection moulding process is crucial to get right and Smell Away®  has reviewed and revised many CAD (computer aided design) drawings. We test printed these designs using 3D printing, this enabled us to build our and test our prototypes. The 3D CAD designs took 5 days to print so was no small task!

We had to balance our design aesthetics look and feel versus injection moulding optimisation so the parts create successfully inside the mould.
